Defibrillator

Researchers from the Baim Institute for Clinical Research in Boston found that healthcare costs for implantable cardioverter defibrillator shocks (appropriate and inappropriate) can be substantial. The average costs were about $5600 for an appropriate shock and $4500 for an an inappropriate shock. In addition, patients often required medical intervention even after an appropriate shock.

Speed in heart rate recovery 20 seconds after standing could predict an older adult’s risk of death within the next 4 years. Researchers at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland found that individuals with the slowest recovery rates were 7 times more likely to die compared with those with faster recovery rates.
